This week’s lesson will focus on introductory terms you should know and understand in order to build a strong foundation of your health & wellness knowledge! Now more than ever we need to keep our immune system at its peak performance, having the knowledge of what and why your body needs certain nutrients is the best place to start! Starting with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, these buzzwords are everywhere in the health & wellness world, but what do they really mean and why do we need them?

VITAMINS & MINERALS
In order for your body to function normally it needs inputs of raw materials to be able to keep working, like how an engine needs oil to run smoothly. This is where vitamins and minerals come in! But what really are vitamins & minerals? Let’s break it down & debunk these super common terms for you!
You’ve probably been told before “Take your vitamins everyday!” or “Eat your veggies – they are packed with vitamins!”. But what exactly are vitamins?
Vitamins are organic compounds, they are essential nutrients that the body cannot produce enough of on its own, so it needs to get vitamins from your food. Your body needs appropriate amounts of all 13 vitamins in order to function and fight off disease effectively. There are 2 types of Vitamins: Fat-Soluble (Vitamin A, D, E, K), these vitamins are stored in your fat cells, meaning they need fat in order to be absorbed. Fat-Soluble vitamins; build bones, protect vision and protect the body from unstable molecules. What about the other type? Water-Soluble Vitamins ( B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, C), are not stored in your body and thus need to be replenished daily! Water-Soluble vitamins release & engage energy production, build protein & cells and make collagen!
Unlike vitamins, minerals are inorganic and hold their chemical structure. This means that the minerals in soil and water can easily find their way into your body through the plants, animals & fluids you consume! This is one reason it’s so important to eat as organic as possible! A balanced diet will provide the body with the essential macro-minerals it needs, such as potassium, calcium & magnesium. Trace minerals, or micro-minerals, include iron, fluoride, selenium, zinc & copper to name a few!
Don’t Forget to take your Vitamins… & Minerals!
A healthy diet comprised of whole foods, regular exercise and high quality zzz’s will generally take care of your body’s vitamin & mineral needs. But sometimes we can be deficient in some areas and it’s okay to supplement! Here’s what I recommend:
Vitamin D3, B12 & Zinc
I love taking Vitamin D3, not just in the winter, but year round! Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that promotes the absorption of calcium, regulates bone growth and plays a role in immune function. Vitamin D3 specifically, is the most effective type of Vitamin D you can take! Your best sources are through oily fish, egg yolks and Vitamin D3 Supplements.
Did you know that most of us are severely deficient of Vitamin B12 regardless of our diet? B12 is one of those essential vitamins our body needs but can’t produce one its own, so supplement it up! Vitamin B12 is excellent for brain & nerve health, preventing heart disease and improving your memory!
Zinc helps drastically boost your immune system and metabolism function. Zinc is considered an essential nutrient and is actually is the second-most-abundant trace mineral in your body, second to iron! Give your body what it needs, and Zinc it up!

Antioxidants can also be seen in non-vitamin substances, such as in plant-based foods, like flavonoids, catechins and polyphenols. The bottom line is that each antioxidant serves a different function and helps heal your body in a unique way, that is why at the end of the day what is most important is to have a varied diet!
