What makes a food super anyway?

Well… Superfoods or VIF’s (very important foods) are powerful, restorative, energizing and are simply loaded with goodness!
We all know of some of these superstar foods like kale, spinach, avocados, organic salmon, lemons etc.…But here are my top 7 superfoods whose stars are on the rise…

1. Goji berries

Pure goodness. Goji berries were originally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to help longevity and build strength. They contain 18 kinds of amino acids (including 8 essential amino acids), approximately 21 minerals, crazy high amounts of antioxidants, iron, polysaccharides, vitamins B & E and the list goes on and on… They are delicious either in smoothies or simply soaked in your tea.

With all those benefits, no wonder they have stood the test of time and earned the superfood title.

2. Raw hemp

Delicious on top of a salad or in a smoothie, raw hemp seeds or hearts are the bomb. They are packed with 33% digestible protein. Hemp seeds are rich in iron, amino acids, vitamin E, omega-3’s and GLA (gamma-Linolenic acid), which is an anti-inflammatory essential fat. If you want to increase the amount of protein you eat in a day, adding hemp seed to your diet is a great way.

3. Non-pasteurized Bee Products

Even though bees and I aren’t necessarily best-friends, I love the products they produce. Did you know that bee pollen contains almost all B vitamins? Oh, and just to make it even better, bee pollen is also considered a complete protein since it contains 21 essential amino acids. Honey, when found in the purest state, is super rich in minerals, antioxidants, probiotics and enzymes. Hence why I can say, guilt-free, that non-pasteurized, pure, raw honey is my go-to when it comes to sweeteners.

4. Spirulina

Spirulina is one of the 45 reasons why I love the Super Elixir Alkalizing pH Balanced Formula. Spirulina is one of the 45 bio-live ingredients that make the Super Elixir so freaking amazing. It is the world’s highest source of complete protein (a whopping 65%) all while being an explosion of minerals, micronutrients, phytonutrients and enzymes. Ok, I must admit, it doesn’t taste great. This is why I love knowing that I get my daily dose of spirulina thanks to my Super Elixir without even having to taste it.

5. Sea veggies

Sea veggies are absolutely amazing! They help our bodies by detoxifying our liver, getting rid of unwanted heavy metals and radioactive iodine, regulating immunity and decreasing the risk of cancer. Among them is kelp, which is also found in the Super Elixir; it provides instrumental benefits our thyroids, immune system, adrenal and hormone functions. Nothing beats the goodness of the sea.

6. Medicinal mushrooms

Medicinal mushrooms are really high in polysaccharides and immune boosting components, making them a no-brainer to add to my list. Medicinal mushrooms are an amazing adaptogenic superfood that have been proven effective in healing cancer. Did I mention that the Super Elixir contains shitake mushrooms and maitake mushrooms? Just another reason why the Super Elixir is my superpower health supplement of choice!

7. Cacao & raw chocolate

Cacao is the seed of a fruit that grows on Amazonian trees. Untreated, cacao beans are supercharged with the highest levels of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Containing serotonin, theobromine and anandamide, no wonder it’s been referred to as the “bliss seed”.
All those complicated sounding compounds make raw chocolate a go-to when wanting to improve cardiovascular health while building strong and healthy bones. Let’s keep in mind that this natural aphrodisiac elevates your mood, boosts your energy and increases longevity.

Personally, I love to get my share of raw cacao from my Nourishing Protein. This all natural pea protein, free from processed whey and artificial ingredients, is a complete source with all 9 essential amino acids for strength, endurance, as well as a more energised and lean body. The more power to you!

This Alkaline Nourishing Protein is also a healthy way to slim down while keeping your weight and hormones in check.

Now, a good old piece of dark chocolate always sounds very appealing. Here’s what you need to keep in mind. In order to make the chocolate we all love, the raw cacao beans are roasted to form cocoa to which sugar and fat are added. Needless to say, this transformation process alters the beans and thereby reduces its health benefits considerably. Ideally, you should look for organic dark chocolate with the lowest % of sugar and the highest % of cocoa powder (between 70% and 85%).

Happy indulging…
