An Interview on Self-Love with Julie Katerine
We’ve been getting many wonderful questions from our community, the GG team thought it was about time to sit down with Julie Katerine, CEO & founder of Global Glow, and interview her on all things self-love! Since self-love is one of the core pillars of leading a healthy lifestyle, and is often overlooked, we decided it was prime time to dive deep into loving yourself with JK. Keep in mind that self-love is a practice we should embrace every day not just on special occasions, its more than just throwing on a face mask once a week. What lies beneath the surface can be tough to handle, but that is where self-care is needed the most. Keep reading for JK’s tips, tricks & valuable insights that she recommends to everyone!
Let’s start off by having you tell us a little about yourself?!
“Hey beauties, so happy to introduce myself! I’m a health & wellness junkie, born and raised in Montreal. A bit about me, I’m a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, lifestyle curator, wellness entrepreneur, autoimmune disease overcomer and proud mom of three. At the age of 31, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and my life changed overnight. I immediately set about a new way of life that would forever change my wellness journey. By altering my mindset and lifestyle in terms of diet, exercise, stress and toxic surroundings, I freed myself from this disease. I can proudly say that I’ve been medication-free since 2011 and have never felt better!
I became a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach so that I can support and guide my clients with their own health goals and struggles by helping them implement a more balanced and integrated lifestyle. What do you wish you could tell your younger self?
“I would tell my younger self to listen to my body. As a teen I wasn’t very health conscious, I thought that eating healthy, exercising and taking care of my body were things I didn’t have to do until I was an adult. But actually, your younger years is one of the most crucial times to feed and treat your body well since you’re still developing. The earlier you can learn to listen to your body and become in tune to what it is telling you, the better! Understanding the signals your body is giving you is such a powerful tool you will use for the rest of your life. Once you start listening to your body and appreciating all that it does for you, you will learn to love and embrace it for how powerful and beautiful it is.”
Where does self-love fit in the Global Glow philosophy?
“Self-love is an integral part of the Global Glow philosophy. You can’t heal a body you don’t love. And to heal a part of the outside, you must start within, the rest will follow. At the end of the day, even if you eat healthy and do all the right things, none of it matters if you don’t embrace and respect your body. The relationship with yourself is the most important relationship you can ever have and self-care is an amazing way to focus on you!”
“Self-care is a blend of what feels good instantly and what makes you feel happier & healthier in the long run. It includes all the nice things such as taking a bath or doing a face mask. But, more importantly is the deeper stuff like embracing your true self, protecting your emotional wellbeing and fuelling your body with healthy food. To me, self-care is a form of self-respect. Taking the time to prioritize your physical & mental needs will always be a pillar of ultimate health and happiness.”

What role do health & wellness play in achieving self-love?
“Health and wellness play such a crucial role in self-love, people who have more self-compassion have actually been shown to have lower levels of inflammation in the body! The Global Glow approach starts with analyzing your primary foods which are actually comprised not of the food itself. Primary foods are actually made up of all aspects of our lives, from our careers to our interpersonal relationships, to the amount of physical activity we do, to our emotions and spirituality. To me, one of the most important pillars in our primary foods is self-care. The combination of all of these elements influence the outcome of our wellness journey and build a strong foundation of health.”
How have you adapted your routine during the pandemic to stay happy & healthy?
“I’ve focused on getting back to the basics, which will overall positively affect my mindset. Such as getting deep restorative sleep, cooking more from home, moving my body in ways I love and connecting my day to habits that benefit me & bring me joy. Essentially, I removed as much toxicity from my everyday life as possible. I’ve taken this time as a valuable learning period to appreciate the importance of the things in life we usually take for granted, such as good health & precious time with family.”
What habits can you recommend to readers to help in improving self-confidence & reducing self-doubt?
“Practice mindfulness! For me, I’ve found meditation (I use @insightimer) to be a priceless tool to ground me, reduce stress & anxiety, leaving me feel more empowered. But I know meditation isn’t for everyone and that is okay. The trick is to find what makes a difference in the way you feel. Something simple everyone can do every day, is starting and ending their day with a positive mantra and ending with positive affirmations. Start building a habit of speaking to yourself positively and intentionally, and your self-confidence will naturally rise! I also recommend journaling, start with simply writing 5 things you’re grateful for at the end of every day. By releasing positive energy into the world, more will be drawn your way. It’s a two-way street!”

We all know that the internet can often be a negative space, so how can we use social media as a vehicle to drive self-love and positivity?
“Social media is like food in the sense that there is a lot of junk out there and some foods make us feel better than others. The beauty of social media is that you can tailor your feed to exactly what you want to see, so make it a positive space for yourself! Follow accounts that bring you joy & improve your life in one way or another. At Global Glow we stand by authenticity and genuine connection with our community, I advise you to use social media to find your community! But sometimes, one of the healthiest ways we can use social media is by not using it at all. I recommend taking one day a week for a social media detox. It’s only one day, you can do it!”
What does your self-love routine look like?
“My self-love routine revolves around doing what I love! When we engage in activities that we truly enjoy, we are the best version of our self. For me that looks like: enjoying time with my family, going for long walks with my pups, cooking a meal or baking something sweet together. For my me-time I always make an at home spa experience. First I dry brush, then do a facial massage with my Gua Sha, and take a luxurious bath with essential oils, candles and good music. I take this time to reflect on my week or my day, let myself feel all the feelings I need to work through, and just be!”
What is your biggest guilty pleasure or indulgence?
“Definitely a glass of red wine and dark chocolate, but I don’t feel guilty about it! We shouldn’t feel guilty about foods that nourish our soul and bring us comfort. Listen to your body and its cravings, it’s trying to tell you something! I know when I feel like I need to indulge in dark chocolate, my body is telling me that it’s low in magnesium. In moderation, the “guilty pleasure” foods we are craving are just as important as the healthy foods we eat. This is because they bring us happiness and are a message from the body that it’s deficient in certain nutrients. Moral of the story, if you’re craving dark chocolate, have a piece or two 😉 “
