How to Boost Your Metabolism During Stressful Times

We’ve all been there. In periods of high stress or uncertainty our priorities sometimes shift away from our health. We’re only human, this is a natural part of life, so don’t be so hard on yourself when your health slides, especially this past year…

Since March we’ve been in complete lockdown in Canada. Between homeschooling the kids, running my business, managing everything as a single mom, missing socialization & struggling to keep a positive outlook at times, I’ll admit that my mental health definitely took a hit. With all this added stress and anxiety, even I the Health Coach, felt the threat and my body went into fight or flight mode at times. My adrenaline & cortisol levels shot up, thereby affecting my sugar & carb cravings, my adrenal system, hormonal system and my overall metabolism. I had many anxious & restless nights resulting in low energy days and poor digestion.

I’m most certainly not the only one who went through this. Who else can relate? My dear friend & colleague, Dr. Simone Laubscher, PhD, & I wanted to share our top tips that we both use to boost our metabolism.

Follow these tips to get your body & mind back to a state of optimal health & happiness. Keep reading for what you can do to take your health back into your own hands…

Start Empowering Your Life:

1. All About Clean Eating

Eat clean and increase your consumption of fish protein & good fats such as MCT oil, avocado, seeds, olives, coconut, hemp, nut oils, olive oil & avocado oil. Eating well is a lifestyle not a diet, read more here about what I recommend for my clients when it comes to nutrition. Fresh eating will keep your metabolism in check, boost your mental clarity, improve your mood & energy levels and grant you better sleep & skin.

The mind body connection is real, so the best is finding a balance instead of abstinence in terms of eating what you love & what your body needs. By getting your good fat to protein ratios right, you’ll also balance your blood sugar levels and reduce cravings. If you feel you need a little help into this area, take 2 of the Rejuv Blood Sugar Support Capsules 30 minutes before lunch and maybe even dinner with a glass of water.

2. Cut the Sugar

Sugar is more addictive than most drugs, so giving it up is an important step in the right direction. Enjoying a sweet treat now and then is fine of course, but be aware of the sugar levels in the foods you eat and be sure to opt for natural sweeteners like maple, honey or dates when you can. Giving your body a break from processed sugars will reset your metabolism to kill candida, fungus, heal your gut and become a fat-burning machine.

Apple cider vinegar is also brilliant to support your digestion so that you can absorb your protein to reduce cravings. Many of us do eat enough protein but are not absorbing it properly. If you don’t like the harsh taste of ACV or aren’t a fan of ingesting it in a liquid form regularly – which can also damage your teeth enamel, then we recommend the Rejuv Apple Cider Burn Capsules. This supplement is a game-changer when it comes to fat burning.

3. Reduce Inflammation to Thrive

Eating too many acid-forming foods causes blood and tissues to become acidic, promoting inflammation in the body. Balancing your body’s pH by eating more alkaline forming foods restores your health. I can’t stress enough the importance of a balanced pH since it protects us from the inside out. Remember… being healthy & glowy is an inside job! Learn more about inflammation & how to heal it here!

By keeping your pH levels in check, all the 11 systems of your body will perform optimally. Turmeric is wonderfully effective for reducing inflammation in the body but can be tough to consume everyday. My simple way to get enough turmeric is to add a few drops of the Curtonic Ant-Inflammatory Turmeric Tincture to my water daily. Eat more plants & fewer animals and fast track your health & wellbeing. To get your daily dose of greens in one go, try the iconic Super Elixir, the ultimate alkalizing formula created for the one & only, Elle Macpherson. This light & fresh, easy to drink greens formula will assist your liver in cleansing itself and reduce inflammation levels. It will aid your body’s good functionality by improving your digestion, circulation, energy levels, complexion and serotonin levels.

4. Use Thermogenic Herbs

Warm your system up to boost your metabolism by eating more hot and spicy food: chilli, cayenne pepper, garlic, & ginger. Or even better green tea or matcha which are powerful metabolism boosting, antioxidant-filled ingredients. If you find incorporating these foods into your diet a bit tricky, then try the Rejuv Thermo Metabolic Support Capsules. It’s the first-ever formula Dr. Simone Laubscher, founder of Rejuv, invented to break her food addictions and free herself from eating disorders. This herbal weight management supplement optimizes the body’s natural fat burning processes.

5. Power It Up With Movement

If you really want to power up your metabolism, you must incorporate higher intensity interval training into your workout routine. This will get your heart rate pumping, improve your circulation & allow you to sweat out toxins. For example if you love walking, try doing intervals of walking for 4 minutes and then sprinting for 1 minute & sustain this for 30-45 minutes. You can use this principle on your bike or any exercise where you shift from medium to high intensity.

Supporting your lymphatic system is also crucial. I love doing lymphatic drainage massages with a dry brush, find my routine here. Bouncing is an incredible move to aid your lymphatic system & reduce water retention. This can be done on a trampoline or through moves such as jump squats, jumping jacks or jumping rope. If you want extra support to reduce bloating & water retention in your body, then try the Water Flo Capsules by Rejuv and take two each night before lunch.

6. Chew Your Way to Better Digestion

Give your gut a chance & adopt mindful eating! It sounds obvious but sometimes we need a reminder to chew our food more & eat slower.  Being present & mindful during eating, aka not watching tv or scrolling on your phone will actually support digestion & reduce bloating. Thorough chewing will also help you feel full as it takes about 20 minutes for your gut to speak to your brain to say you are full. Many overeat by not giving their brain enough time to read how full they are. And try to limit your liquid intake while eating to not dilute your stomach acids and bloat your belly. Taking a digestive enzyme before eating will assist with proper nutrient absorption and reduce post meal bloat & discomfort. I recommend the Belly Behave Digestive Enzyme + Probiotic  or the Digestive Support Capsules from Rejuv.

7. Hydrate to Detoxify, Plump & Boost

A great way to up your intake first thing, is to start your day with a detox water. Mix 500ml of filtered water with the juice of half a lemon, half teaspoon of grated ginger, 1-2 pinches of cayenne pepper and one teaspoon of fresh aloe vera inner leaf or 30ml aloe vera juice. I then love to have my 2 teaspoons of Super Elixir Greens mixed in a large water bottle to support my system and set the tone for my day. You consist of around 100 trillion cells. If you drink 2-3L filtered water per day, your cells will be like big fat healthy grapes instead of shrivelled up raisins, allowing goodness to flow in & junk to be removed. This takes the pressure off all the systems of the body, thus boosting your metabolism. You will also be less hungry as your brain won’t confuse thirst for hunger.

8. Go to Bed

If you aren’t sleeping well—or enough—all the healthy eating and online workout classes in the world won’t enable you to feel your best self, mentally & physically. If you’re really committed to your health, you need to be dedicated to your bedtime routine. Getting restful & restorative sleep does wonders for your metabolism & entire body, find a routine that works for you! If you need bedtime aid, here is what I recommend:

The Adrenal Complex Capsules balances cortisol levels and hormones. While also supporting the immune system, improving mental performance and giving a general sense of calm, focus and vitality. Calm your thoughts with the Sedatonic Calming Tincture. Made from 100% pure Ashwaganda root, this adaptogenic herb helps relieve anxiety and stress by reducing cortisol and blood-sugar levels. It’s also effective as a sleeping aid and memory-enhancement tonic. I also love enjoying the Sleep Welle Calming Tea before bed. This all natural sleep aid reduces anxiety and helps set the tone for a good night’s sleep. Enabling you to let go, stress less & wake up feeling more rested.
