Firstly, I’m going to share with you my story. It is the reason behind why I became a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach & HCA Licensed Health Coach™ and why I am so passionate about what I do. My motivation is to heal others, as I did for myself.
For the most part, I lived a life of relatively impeccable health, experiencing no real ailments until the age of 31, when I was diagnosed with early onset rheumatoid arthritis. After the initial shock, my doctors prescribed an intensely rigorous weekly regimen of meds. The concern of having to spend the rest of my life being heavily medicated to manage this autoimmune condition, along with the long list of side effects that came with it, left me overwhelmed with fear and worry. However, it also sparked the beginning of a new reality for me, and so my wellness journey began right then and there.
I began to research alternative ways to combat extreme fatigue, decrease my anxiousness and manage joint pain. Hint hint, it’s all linked to inflammation, but more on that later. I learned that by altering my mindset and lifestyle, in terms of stress, toxic surroundings, diet & exercise, I was able to directly mediate the impact of this autoimmune disease. Essentially, I learned to decrease inflammation in my body, which in turn improved my quality of life substantially. I can proudly say that I have been med-free since 2011 and have never felt better. I am living proof that we all have the will within us.
Intro to Inflammation 101
So what is inflammation? Inflammation is actually the way our bodies naturally react when being “under attack”. Inflammation is how we protect ourselves. It is how our bodies react to “foreigners”. Take T lymphocytes as an example. They are cytotoxic killer cells that eliminate “foreigners” from your body. Here’s the thing though. T lymphocytes create a ton of inflammation.
Chronic vs. Acute Inflammation
Don’t get me wrong, your body needs inflammation to fight off the bad guys, but that inflammation is temporary. Your body’s immune system is supposed to be able to “turn on” & “turn off”. It starts going downhill when inflammation loses its ability to “turn off”. This is called CHRONIC inflammation. Chronic inflammation may result in fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis for example. ACUTE inflammation, on the other hand, may result in bouts of brain fog, fatigue or bloating. Inflammation exists on a continuum: from mild symptoms such as weight gain and fatigue on one end, to hormone imbalances and autoimmune conditions on the other. Failure to reduce inflammation can lead to more chronic conditions.
Inflammation is the cause of 90% of all of our aches, pains and illnesses!
Let’s Talk About Primary Foods
My journey began with assessing the primary foods in my life, in order to get to the root cause of my high levels of inflammation.
Primary foods are actually comprised not of food itself but rather of all aspects of our lives, from our careers to our interpersonal relationships, to the amount of physical activity we do and our quality of sleep, to our emotions and spirituality. All of these elements influence the outcome of our wellness journey. For example, if you are surrounded by toxic energy in your relationships or you are not fulfilled by your career, this can lead to imbalances in the body therefore creating inflammation. Along with inflammation, comes side effects you may commonly know. Such as fatigue, brain fog, increased irritability, poor digestion, aches & pains. I could go on and on…

Even though you may be skeptical at first, your primary foods are literally the elements that contribute to your sense of nourishment and leave you feeling satisfied in your life. When transitioning to a “healthier lifestyle”, it is very common to completely overlook these primary foods. As a Health Coach, I look at my clients’ primary foods, first. Then, I ask them about their secondary foods…
All About Secondary Foods
Secondary foods are the foods we eat to fuel our bodies every day. Everybody has specific needs. This is mainly why fad diets never really work. One person’s food can be another’s poison.
Your health and wellness should be based on your bio-individuality, and not on any given theory. Each of us has unique food preferences and lifestyle needs that make us happiest.
Time to eat MORE!
Nevertheless, it’s important to have a solid understanding and appreciation of the foods that decrease inflammation vs. the foods that can further aggravate your inflammation markers. Here’s a simple outline of what to eat MORE of & what to eat less of, as well as other critical components of healthy living:
Remember “Eat less”, DOESN’T mean “don’t touch”, it simply means less. Crowding out foods will help you create healthy meals, all while staying full and hunger-free!
Wait… rewind a little… what does “crowding out foods” even mean?
Crowding out foods is when you add more foods onto your plate, rather than take foods out. For example, if you choose to adopt the Global Glow lifestyle (which leans towards the alkaline way of living), you will start “crowding” your plate with alkaline foods, leaving less room and desire for the inflammatory foods.
Given the chance, the body will heal itself, by itself. All it needs is the right building blocks and a little TLC, so give your body what it needs, and it will take care of the rest.
